Maritime Employment Information - Government Vessels, Tugboats, Towboats, Ferries, Tour Boats
Here are additional resources for employment in the marine industry...linking to
sites carrying merchant marine jobs, fishing jobs, shore side jobs and work
within the government sector, tug and towing industry, ferry and tour boat
industry, and yacht industry. However, as it was pointed out earlier job seekers
should be aware that certain employment, such as those aboard yachts and
cruise ships may not be U.S. jobs, since the vessels can be registered under a
foreign flag. This could exempt them from U.S. Dept of Labor or OSHA regulations.

U.S. Department of Labor - Contact numbers for Dept of Labor Offices that maintain
regional employment, unemployment, wage information.
When looking for work aboard tugs, ferries, yachts...or any other employment
in the maritime industry, keep in mind that not all companies are the same.
Some positions may require STCW (standards of training, certification and
watchkeeping). Some will require an MMD or Z Card (Merchant Marine
Document). Towing and transportation companies will look for endorsements
on a Coast Guard license. For captain and mate positions, they will request
information outlining your familiarity with bodies of water in which they
navigate. Companies may differ in their benefit packages. Some may offer
pension plans, 401k’s, medical insurance with dental and vision coverage,
vacation leave and other goodies. These are attractive benefits that can be
difficult for smaller operations to offer. Some transportation companies may
hire through a union.

Working aboard commercial vessels, whatever the size of the vessel,
whatever the type of waters (inland, coastal or offshore waters), is classified
by the United States Department of Labor as a water transportation
occupation. This includes deep water seagoing jobs aboard container ships,
tankers, cruise ships, bulk carriers and other large vessels. The U.S. Dept of
Labor said there were 72,000 water transportation jobs in 2004 (this figure
reflects the entire water transportation industry, not just tugs, pushboats, or
any single sector of the insustry). The DOL says the water transportation
industry has a unionization rate of roughly 36%, higher than the national
average for other occupations. The DOL predicts that employment in water
transportation occupations will grow more slowly than all occupations through
2014. They add that jobs will result from a need to replace the ranks of people
exiting the industry.
The Triton  Florida based
newspaper for the yachting
industry - a resource for captains
and crews of yachts, superyachts
& megayachts. It offers news,
information, classified ads, and
an on-line directory with yacht
crew positions, yacht crew
resumes, yacht services, yacht

yacht jobs can involve extensive travel,
depending on the preferences of the vessel
owner. Job on yachts, megayachts and
superyachts are generally posted as:

▪ Captain
▪ Mate
▪ Engineer
▪ Deckhand

Sometimes the same jobs will be identified
by different titles, but these are the basic
