Characteristics of Asbestos. Information About Mesothelioma

Perhaps one of the ugliest characteristic of asbestos exposure is the latency period, meaning
that it could take up to 20, 30, or 40 years for diseases such as mesothelioma to be
discovered. Some of the symptoms include shortness of breath and pain in the chest due.
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can include weight loss and abdominal pain and
swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma
may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer
has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain,
trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. It can be difficult to diagnose mesothelioma
because of the similarity of its symptoms to other conditions. Naturally, investigation of patient’
s medical history and work history would be vital. A comprehensive physical examination would
include x-rays of the chest or abdomen and lung function tests. A CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI
would be an important diagnostic imaging tool in investigating for respiratory diseases
associated with asbestos exposure.
